The Burnley and District Gilbert
and Sullivan Society was formed amidst great optimism in
1970 by enterprising members of the then Angle Street
Baptist Society. This optimism was not misplaced and we are
now in our 33rd year.
In recent times we have enjoyed success with our
productions of “The Gondoliers” and “Ruddigore” and have
received several nominations and awards from NODA (National
Operatic and Dramatic Association).
Amongst the society’s stated objectives is, “To promote
plays, dramas, comedies, opera, operettas and other
dramatic and operatic works of educative value”.
If you share these sentiments then why not become a member
of the society. Membership is open to anyone over the age
of 14. The annual subscription is only £10 and for this you
receive the quarterly newsletter which keeps you up to date
with society news. Society membership also entitles you at
no extra cost to purchase tickets through our priority
booking scheme, ensuring that your admiring friends and
family will have the best possible seats to enjoy your
performance from.
We also welcome patrons of the society, who would like to
receive the benefits of membership, but perhaps feel that
they don’t want to actually perform in the society, these
people can pay a reduced subscription of £5 annually.
If you are interested in becoming a member or a patron
please click on the membership link on our homepage.
We are always interested in hearing from prospective
performing members, of all ages and gender, although as
always younger members are in great demand. Rehearsals are
held every Tuesday at Bethesda Church on Bethesda Street in
Burnley Centre. There are no formal auditions for chorus
members however a small amount of musical talent would be
preferable (although listening to rehearsals some nights
you wouldn’t always think so).
